TARYN kNIGHT: ARTist/illustrator

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF…..

Hello! My name’s Taryn. I’m a freelance artist and book illustrator currently painting away in my little home studio in the fields of Colorado.

I grew up homeschooled in a rural setting, always drawing and checking under rocks for interesting bugs. I credit such a childhood for much of my inspiration and spark today, in both my art and adult life.

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?

In general, being out in nature and seeking out bits of everyday magic really lift me up. I feel most at peace with myself when I’m tromping through the tall grass or foraging for herbs. Finding beauty and inspiration in the tiniest of things really fuels my creativity and overall joy.

And painting, of course! Really any hobby that lets me work with my hands and express myself.

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON AND WHY?

I couldn’t possibly name only a singular style icon, but I do find style inspiration and ideas from the wonderful people I’ve met through Instagram, mostly the ones focused on slow fashion, living close to nature, feeling at home with oneself. My style influences tend to shift a bit as I slowly explore new things, but at it’s core it remains grounded in simplicity and comfort.

WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AND READING AT THE MOMENT?

To be honest, I’ve mostly just been listening to the birds. It truly feels like spring now, and I can never bring myself to put on a playlist when there’s a chorus of birdsong or rainfall outside my window. When I do listen to music, my favourite artists lately have been Florence Welch, Bess Atwell, Aurora, Lizzy McAlpine, Shannon Lay…too many to remember all at once!

Right now I’m reading The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews and am enjoying myself immensely! It part of my quest to revisit some of the books I’d been introduced to as a kid.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT SIDELINE?

Over the last seven or so years, I’ve become more and more aware and passionate about clothes in the sense of where they come from, how they’re made, whether or not they’re ethically produced. Sideline really to my values in the sense that they promote slow, consciously produced garments that are unique, flowing, and (importantly!) comfortable. Their use of color and pattern in combination makes my artist heart very very happy!
